Sam Miranda is the third generation of a prominent winemaking family who moved from Italy to Australia in the 1930s. Having grown up amongst winemakers in the wine region of Griffith in New South Wales, Sam met growers from the King Valley in Victoria who visited Griffith to sell their fruit. They talked about the beauty of the King Valley and showed off the excellent fruit that was making great wines. The strong Italian immigrant population of Griffith and the King Valley proved excellent for business and communication between the two regions ensured Sam developed strong bonds with the people from the region. It was not until 1991, however, when Sam first visited the King Valley for himself, that his destiny was decided. Since that day, living and working in the King Valley became a dream and Sam moved there to take up a winemaking position with the family business, Miranda Wines in 1996.
The King Valley has a reputation as an exceptional region for producing wines of high quality and it is home to passionate winemakers with fresh ideas. Sam was so enamored with the potential of the region and the quality of the fruit that he purchased a 70 hectare property on the corner of Snow and King Valley Roads in 1997. The following year in 1998, Sam Miranda’s long held ambition became a reality when construction commenced on Sam Miranda’s very own winery and Cellar Door. Today Sam Miranda’s winery and vineyard stands tall in the heart of the Milawa food and wine gourmet region and on the way to the snow fields of Bright, Falls Creek and Mount Hotham.
In 2003 Sam moved on from the family business in Griffith and moved permanently to the King Valley. It was at this time Sam took on full ownership of the property just prior to the 2004 vintage and has been making his own style of King Valley wines since then.
In November 2004 Sam expanded his part of the King Valley and purchased a 120 hectare property in the Myrrhee district which currently has 12 hectares under vine. Not only is this a rich and productive property, it also offers magnificent views over the surrounding mountains, a nice way to work while Sam sits on his tractor some 4oo metres above sea level.
To Sam the future is written in hard work and strong development; in being able to plant, grow, source and make his own wines that reflect the true style of the King Valley. He feels a strong affinity to the region attributed to its strong Italian heritage and its development of Italian varieties many of which Sam grows including Sangiovese, Pinot Grigio and Arneis.
In Autumn 2007, the new Sam Miranda King Valley cellar door opened providing visitors with a unique wine and food experience. Designed by renowned Sydney architect, Alex Popov, the Cellar Door includes both a wine tasting and cafe area. The design is modern but simplistic offering a relaxed atmosphere to compliment Sam’s wines and the beautiful surroundings. Our chef's serve delicious Mediterranean inspired cuisine using local and seasonal produce that is delighting local foodies and tourists alike.
It’s a long time since Sam’s grandfather Francesco 'Pop' Miranda started making wines in 1939. It was his vision and hard work that set the scene for the family business. Now a new generation, and a new winemaker (Sam Miranda) has his sights set on producing wines from one of the best grape growing regions in Australia, the King Valley.
