Blockbuster calendar announced for the 2013 Subaru National Road Series

Cycling Australia has announced a bumper calendar for the 2013 Subaru National Road Series (NRS) with a total of 17 individual events to be held across the nation. The 2013 NRS will see six combined men’s and women’s events with three stand-alone women’s and eight stand-alone men’s events, with new events in South Australia and Western Australia.
In total the women will contest nine events — up from six in 2012 — totalling 27 days of racing while the men will race 14 events — up from 12 this year — equalling 50 days of racing. The men’s NRS will see four significant new events added to the schedule with the Tour de Perth (WA) in April to kick start the series before the men head to northern New South Wales for the Battle on the Border in May. South Australia will be introduced to the series with the Adelaide Tour followed by the ACT for the National Capital Tour in September — previously known as the ‘Canberra Women’s Tour’.  In another innovative move by Cycling Australia, the Launceston to New Norfolk Classic has been replaced by an eight-day Tour of Tasmania to encompass more communities and regions on the apple isle.

The Tours of Toowoomba, North West, Gippsland, Murray, South Coast, and the Goulburn to Sydney, Shipwreck Coast and Melbourne to Warrnambool Classics, will all return with the historic Grafton to Inverell again concluding the Series in October.

The women’s NRS also sees widespread changes including new additions the Sam Miranda Tour of the King Valley (VIC) in August, the Adelaide Tour (SA) in May and a shortened version of the Murray River Tour (NSW/VIC) in September.

The Mersey Valley Tour will again commence the Series in April followed by the Battle on the Border in May.

The North West Tour (NSW) will make a return as well as the newly renamed National Capital Tour (Canberra Women’s Tour) and the Shipwreck Coast (VIC) before the Tour of the Goldfields (VIC) concludes the NRS in October.

“2012 was a year of strong growth for the NRS, with record numbers of teams and riders while highlights of each race were broadcast on official broadcaster SBS,” said Sean Muir, Cycling Australia’s National Manager – Sport.

“Now the 2013 Subaru NRS includes races in every state and the ACT, delivering for the first time a true national footprint.

“When pulling the series together we are always focused on delivering increased safety and consistency and we’re very excited about a record number of events and race days on the calendar,” Mr Muir added.

General Manager of Subaru Marketing, Andrew Caie, said the company was pleased to see the series continuing to evolve.

“2013 is the second year Subaru has been involved in helping the Subaru NRS to grow and develop,” said Caie.
“Subaru in partnership with SBS and Cycling Australia has telecast the Series nationally via Cycling Central platforms, something of which we are very proud.

“I am delighted to see the Subaru NRS grow in popularity and I’m looking forward to 2013 which is shaping up to be an even bigger step forward for home grown Australian cycling,” added Caie.
